Monasticism

“Then Jesus, looking at him, loved him, and said to him, “One thing you lack: Go your way, sell whatever you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, take up the cross, and follow Me.” (Mark 10:21)

Monasticism is a special calling answered by certain men and women who embark on the ascetic struggle to conquer the carnal passions, and reach great spiritual heights. Their life is one of unceasing prayer, fasting, spiritual reading, contemplative stillness, and physical work. Their aim is to lay aside the cares and distractions of the world, so they may focus on theosis - divine transformation into the likeness of God.

Our monks and nuns take a lifelong vow of poverty, chastity and obedience. In so doing, they surrender all for the sake of drawing close to Christ, and experiencing the peace that transcends all understanding (Philippians 4:5-7).
